That's me
This is Brigitte, my angel
" Born in Ghent, Belgium, on
December 11th 1959, Jan started painting
and exhibiting at the age of 15, as an auto-didact. After years of
technical experience, his style and his vision on art have been
developping in a personal approach of his prefered material being
oil-paint,
applied in many delicate layers.
The combination of many layers of transparent paint builds a relief
surface that gives his painting style a fresh, vivid look.
The paintings of Jan capture
the glory of nature.
The subjects of Jan's compositions take the viewer on a journey out of
doors, to France, Italy, Greece... He pursues his ideal and creates a
subtile atmosphere in a mixture of impressionism and expressionism.
His favorite themes are nature, gardens, flowers, birds or
butterflies... colorful subjects which he provides with his personal
touch. Though these subjects are only an excuse to create
color and light. Jan's paintings are a real ode to color, light,
freedom : The sun shines hot yellow, breezes blow the linden trees,
water reflects gold and creates a calming unity of light on water.
Through many, thick layers
of oil-paint and by the
vibration in this material, Jan is trying to breathe life into his
creations. On many occasions, the game of color and light is leading an
own life so that one may neglect the subject and see the entire as an
abstraction. This is mostly true with the close-up flower paintings.
In essence he is a colorist,
lead by that one
ideal : creating life in his work by means of subtile light-variations,
vivid color applications, in an energetic and expressive approach. "
" Jan Wille
capitalizes a maximum of artistic qualities. The freshness of his
palette constitutes a constant in his works, that are real
kaleidoscopes of colors, where light prevails over anecdote.
In fact, what strikes
us is an almost religious communion of color and light and there is no
denying that, on seeing this spectacle, we cannot prevent ourselves
from dreaming... "
Summer of 1965 - I was on a visit to the belgian
expressionist painter Albert Servaes and his wife
" Jan
Wille is possessed by the magic of blinding
sunlight and searches to transform this light-expierience into color.
Into
the playful and instantaneous impressions
proper to impressionism, he in his way puts passion to bring things to
a head.
In wet paint he intensifies, layer upon layer, the strength of colors
that apparently never satisfy him. But the powerful strokes of the
brush don't bring him only powerful colors, they model the design and
suggest movement."
